For its first exhibition organized at Fabrica de Pensule, titled pleats of probability, Borderline Art Space (Iași) invites the public from Cluj-Napoca to meet two artists who work with different mediums: the Polish-born painter Gregor Eldarb and the Romanian photographer Iosif Király, whose early works can be seen these days in a retrospective exhibition hosted by the National Contemporary Art Museum in Bucharest. The opening of the exhibition curated by Edith Lázár takes place Thursday, September 6th, 6 pm, at Fabrica de Pensule ground floor (RAP).

As we look at materiality today, we are reminded of its complex set of relations that, among others, speaks of visualisation, temporality, recollection, textures and atmosphere. Surfaces (surrounding us) appear thus something like a place of an encounter or an active site of exchange, able to model and re-model our experience of everydayness. Sharing an affinity for architecture, both Iosif Király and Gregor Eldarb treat surfaces as a sort of membrane that holds together the visual and the spatial in an overlap of textures. Part of Synapses series, Király’s photographic assemblages propose a personal archiving of the Danube area through a meticulous recording of sequential moments that otherwise form the artist’s enduring investigation of social or political changes different spaces can mirror. Gregor Eldarb, however, multiplies perspectives through painterly surfaces, layer over layer of geometrical compositions that trace and re-trace – just like mental cartographies – motions and wordplays between the private and the urban.

pleats of probability just lets these overlaps of fiction and traces flow in a manner that, at times, can offer a glimpse into the inherent structure of an image and the almost performative gesture that constructs it, yet moreover aims to suggest a sense of movement (in and around the works) and the subtle forms of public intimacy.

Gregor Eldarb (b.1971 in Bielsko-Biala, Poland), lives and works in Vienna; 1992-1997 studies Painting and Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna; since 2005 constant participation in solo- and group shows national and international; various Awards and Residencies i.e. WIELS Residency, BMUKK Studio, Brussels, outstanding artist award – Recognition award – Bildende Kunst, Bundeskanzleramt, I.S.C.P. The International Studio & Curatorial Program New York, USA, State Scholarship for Fine Arts, BMUKK; Commissions-Projects i.e. in Berlin and St. Petersburg.
